Whitehawk had the better of the opening few minutes, with a free kick out on the right falling to Lucas Rodrigues, his shot being cleared by Alex Bentley.

With Whitehawk continuing to come forward, good play by Ky Marsh-Brown led to a corner. Henry Muggeridge sent the kick over and it found Fintan Walsh, whose header was tipped over by Callum Chafer.

Remi Sutton became the first to go into the book for a foul on Rodrigues on 16 minutes.

A minute later Hornchurch had their first opportunity of the match, when a George Purcell shot was charged down by Lewis Unwin.

The action switched back to the other end, where a Whitehawk corner fell to Kenzer Lee, who sprinted forward, exchanged a one two with Purcell and crossed, the ball just eluding Sean Marks.

On 22 minutes George Saunders set off on a speedy run, leaving the defender trailing, but keeper Melvin Minter came out quickly to block the shot.

Sean Marks did well to win the ball inside the area and he played it back to Jordan Clark, who fired over the bar from twenty yards, and Hornchurch applied more pressure, when a snapshot from Purcell went wide of the target.

For much of the season Hornchurch have been prone to conceding a goal in the last few minutes of the half, and it happened yet again, when, on 45 minutes the ball was played down the right to Lucas Rodrigues, who beat Chafer from a narrow angle. 0-1.

One minute was indicated for stoppages, during which time Minter tipped over a Purcell shot, and the corner, from Saunders, was cleared.

Half time – Hornchurch 0 Whitehawk 1

Whitehawk made one change at the interval, Jerry Amoo replacing Ky Marsh-Brown.

After a quiet opening quarter hour, Whitehawk went further ahead, when Fintan Walsh headed home from a corner. 0-2.

It was not until the 66th minute that Hornchurch could offer any threat to the visiting goal, when Ronnie Winn had a good chance but sent his shot wide from twenty yards out.

Henry Muggeridge became the second player to pick up a yellow card, on 69 minutes.

With the minutes ticking away, and relegation beginning to look too much of a threat, Hornchurch pulled a goal back with fifteen minutes left. George Saunders sent the ball over from a corner and the ball dropped to Joe Christou to sidefoot home. 1-2.

Manager Mark Stimson made his first change, when Charlie Stimson replaced Sean Marks, and Lewis Unwin became the second visiting player to be shown a yellow card three minutes later, for a foul on Purcell. Kelvin Minter followed him into the book four minutes later.

With six minutes left, Whitehawk had a good chance to increase their lead through Jerry Amoo, but his shot went straight into the arms of Callum Chafer. Luke Emberson then replaced Lewis Unwin.

With three minutes to go Minter made an excellent save from Purcell, and with one minute remaining, Sonny Dutton came on for Jordan Clark.

With five minutes added on for stoppages, Daniel Pinney went into the book as Whitehawk clung on desperately to their lead, and he was promptly replaced by James Fraser, and Whitehawk held on to take three points, leaving Hornchurch too close to the drop zone for comfort, just six points clear with three matches to go.
