GREAT WAKERING ROVERS 0 HORNCHURCH 4
With Southend at home and thousands going to the amusements on a bright sunny day, the journey to Great Wakering was once again a long slow tedious haul along the A127.
Hornchurch started well, and soon controlled the midfield, but it was not until the 11th minute that either side created a scoring chance, and it was Urchins who nearly took the lead when Dave Collis touched a short free kick back to Andy Tomlinson, who hit a first time shot narrowly past the far post. Trenkle broke up the next attack and the home side moved upfield to win a corner, which Khory-Davidson floated over and Collis headed out for another corner, and this time it was Darren Behcet who rose well to catch the inswinging ball. Ty Benjamin then went close with a first time shot on the edge of the area, which was saved well by Behcet. Gary Bowes tried a similar shot at the other end, which went inches over the bar.
Urchins took the lead when Mark Janney eluded Pitts and floated the ball across to the far post where MARK GOODFELLOW rose well to head home. Louis Green did well to hold on to a Collis corner, and the home side nearly levelled when a clearance by Darren Behcet cannoned back off of Benjamin, the ball just rolling the other side of the post.
Donny Barnard set up Gary Bowes who twisted and turned before hammering his shot goalwards, when Green saved at full stretch, but the second goal soon followed, when Reece played the ball forward to GARY BOWES who rounded two defenders before placing his shot wide of the diving Green. Both sides made changes for the second half, and for Hornchurch only Behcet and Reece played the full ninety minutes. Urchins stepped up the pace and almost went further ahead when Ross Wall saw his shot turned around the post by the substitute goalkeeper for a corner, but a minute later it was Steve Butterworth making the opening on the right and he neatly crossed into the goalmouth for SOZ RAO to tap home. Urchins continued to press forward and the fourth goal came when Behcet’s long upfield clearance found STEVE BUTTERWORTH, who ran on, took the ball past the keeper, and calmly slotted it in the net.
Rovers came back and Collis had to head a shot off the line for a corner, and another opening saw the ball just clear the bar. But for the most part it was Hornchurch on top and a Reece through pass to Yao saw the home keeper make an excellent diving save to tip the ball around the post for another corner. Jon Green was set up by Ross Wall, but could not get his shot in as he was crowded out, and a minute later Green returned the compliment when he set up Ross Wall, who hit his shot a fraction wide of the goal. A comfortable win over a very eager home side, who tried hard towards the end to come up with a consolation goal, but Behcet saved twice in the last five minutes to deny them.
