Match Report by Tony Middleton
Ron Fletcher in for Jordan, injured at
Sudbury, and Garry Cross back after his injury against Aveley. A much reduced
crowd, many of whom arrived late, due to the closure of the main road
following a serious incident at Upminster Bridge station, and a gale force
wind sweeping downfield. Harlow won the toss and chose to kick with the wind
in their backs.
Harlow took full advantage of the gale to force a corner, but Lalite’s kick
swerved behind the goal. A Glozier free kick was aimed at Lee but the ball
swirled back in the wind and drifted out of play close to the half way line.
Much more worrying was when Garry Cross appeared to pull up sharply, but after
a few minutes he was able to run the knock off. With many of the crowd still
arriving, Urchins took the lead when a Glozier corner was deflected out for
another corner, which this time was pumped into the goalmouth and KRIS LEE
rose well to head home. One nil, and it soon became two when Kris Lee flicked
the ball on to SIMON PARKER who ran on and hit the ball home. Inside a minute
it was three, with some fine work by Parker on the left, and he cut inside,
and turned the ball back across goal for KRIS LEE to slid it home. Three goals
in two minutes and 45 seconds. It could have been four when Lee sent Parker
away down the middle, but Jackson rushed out and hammered the ball out of the
ground, narrowly missing Rob’s camera in the process. Then it was Janney, put
clear on the right by Lee, and he touched the ball inside to Parker, whose
goalbound flick was well saved by Jackson.
Harlow still enjoyed a fair share of territorial possession, and Lalite put
another corner behind the goal, the wind swirling the ball out of play.
Winston made a good run, and his cross was headed away by McFarlane for a
corner, again taken by Lalite, the ball being part cleared by Southon but
played back to Lalite whose long shot was well held by Brightly. Janney popped
up in the inside left position and made ground before slipping a pass through
to Lee and thence to Parker, with Jackson running out of goal to gather, and
then Cross found Tomlinson on the left but Kirby covered well and hit the ball
upfield.
A Taylor free kick came swirling in and Purdie cleared. A minute later it was
Glidden with a hard free kick which Fletcher got to first, and an exchange of
passes between Lalite and Boateng ended when Lalite cracked his shot narrowly
wide. Urchins struggled to adjust, playing into the gale, although Parker did
well to win a corner, which Janney took, playing short to Cross and back to
Janney, with Warren nipping in to tackle and concede a follow up corner.
Janney played this one into the middle and Lee almost found the net with a
glancing header.
Half time and Max went hunting for some young girls, eventually finding Marie
and Mary-Ann, who jointly pulled out Max’s winning ticket, and a happy Urchin
walked away £60 better off, less of course his £1 stake. Terry came by, doing
a passable imitation of a pawnbroker, holding the three balls which were
booted out of the ground in the first half. And news of other Senior Cup
matches came in – the matches at Canvey and Grays were both off.
Second half and with a three goal advantage it looked a good as over, as
Urchins dropped down a gear. A Southon to Janney looked dangerous until Taylor
nipped across to clear, and a powerful free kick from Danny Glozier had Max
reaching for his microphone, only for Jackson to hurl himself across goal to
punch clear. A long upfield kick from Brightly almost found Lee, but Swift was
able to tackle and concede a corner, which Tomlinson took, and the ball was
played back out to Andy show centre went begging across goal. Swift was the
centre of attention again when he was given a lengthy lecture following a rash
tackle and from Glozier’s free kick the ball was touched out of play, and
Tomlinson took the corner, finding Southon whose hard shot hit a defender and
just went wide of the goal, for another corner. Tomlinson floated the ball
over and Chapman headed out. A Glozier free kick was headed over by McFarlane,
and a Janney centre was headed out for yet another corner, which Tomlinson
took and Jackson caught. Harlow came back well, with Glidden’s shot being
deflected out by McFarlane, Lalite’s corner then being cleared by Purdie. A
Winston through ball looked dangerous until McFarlane cleared, conceding a
corner and Lalite’s kick was headed away by McFarlane. At the other end a
Tomlinson free kick was well held by Jackson.
Harlow got a goal back when LUDOVIC QUISTIN tried a speculative shot from way
out on the left wing, the wind assisted ball swirling past Dale Brightly and
into the net for what was very much a shock goal. Urchins came back strongly,
McFarlane heading over from Tomlinson’s free kick, and Amos Foyewa, on for
Simon Parker, then went streaking past Kirby but hit his shot high and over
the bar, with possibly Sadler better placed to take a cross. Foyewa again,
with a neat flick on to Sadler but Jackson gathered. And Foyewa once again,
this time to Janney, whose run was thwarted by a massed defence. Right on time
Fletcher conceded a free kick, and a poorly line up wall was more than enough
for MARK TAYLOR to hit the ball low and hard past Brightly. No sooner had
Urchins restarted the play than the final whistle went. In the only other
match played, Great Wakering beat Thurrock by 2-1.
