Match Report by Tony Middleton
A low key performance from both sides as Urchins strolled to
a comfortable win in the league cup. Canvey created the first opportunity when
Tomlinson impeded Gordon and from West’s long free kick Glozier headed away.
Janney sent Parker away at the other end, the move ending with an offside flag
when Simon was about to shoot, Reade did well to beat Fletcher on the left wing
and he turned and played the ball back to Holmes whose neat pass to Charlie
Parker was intercepted by McFarlane, with Fletcher coming back to complete the
clearance. Urchins began to dominate the play and applied considerable pressure
on the visiting defence, Janney winning a midfield ball and finding Lee, who
quickly sent Parker away, the flag once again preventing a possible goal.
Following a good build up on the right, involving Cross, Parker and Janney, the
ball was played across to Tiffin who cut inside and his shot hit the side
netting. Janney won a corner which Glozier took, and Johnson did well to hold on
to a swerving centre. Cross beat two defenders and laid the ball low across
goal, where Lee’s shot hit a defender on the line and rebounded clear. And then
it was Lee to Parker with Johnson making an excellent save to tip the ball over
the bar, Glozier’s resulting corner being overhit and cleared by Holmes.
At the other end a good centre from Corbell was diverted out by Tomlinson, with
Batch taking the corner and McFarlane and Purdie combining to clear. The first
goal was long overdue and it came when a Janney run and cross was only partially
cleared and GARY CROSS played the ball straight back into the net. Urchins
nearly went two up when Janney dummied with a free kick and Glozier hit a hard
shot which Johnson did well to parry, and Lee hit the rebound wide. But the
second goal soon followed, coming when Stuart handled a cross from the left, and
despite his protests of innocence, when the referee put the lace back into the
ball, MARK JANNEY slotted the penalty home with ease.
Two nil, and non stop pressure – Glozier went close with a long range shot, a
Parker bicycle kick would have gone in, had he not miskicked, a hard drive from
Cross was stopped by an overworked Johnson, and Lee hit a shot wide after Cross
had set him up. Almost on half time the third goal arrive. Parker and Lee
exchanged passes, Lee played the ball in and GART CROSS may well have touched it
home.
Half time, and everyone into the club shop for their weekly dose of insults from
Tony, now back in full voice, whilst some lucky riversider went home £95 the
richer with the jackpot draw. Main talking point was where was the Riverside
choir? Answer was that they had all defected to the East Side, which was very
vocal throughout the first half.
Second half was played largely at a stroll, with Canvey again opening well, a
corner from Batch being palmed away by a backpeddling Brightley, and Reade
hitting the ball back into the middle, where McFarlane headed away. And then it
was back to the other end for long spells. Tiffin began to create his own brand
of havoc on the left and from one of his touches, Simon Parker cracked in a good
shot which went inches over the bar. Tiffin again, and this time he won a
corner, with Lamb tackling well, and from Glozier’s corner Fletcher headed over,
with McFarlane perhaps better placed just behind.
The fourth goal came after lengthy pressure, Glozier finding Janney on the right
and his hard shot was turned round the post by Johnson. From Janney’s corner the
ball was part cleared to Glozier in the left back position, and he promptly hit
it back into the area , where Johnson just beat Simon Parker to the ball, but it
was played back yet again and GARY CROSS ran through, Johnson got a touch and
Cross followed up to score.
Canvey’s best chance came when Corbell hit an excellent free kick from 30 yards
which Brightley tipped over the bar, but the remainder of the game had much the
same pattern, with Canvey defending in depth. Urchins nearly added a fifth when
Johnson dropped Janney’s corner, and the whistle went as Simon Parker went to
shoot. Canvey were fortunate to retain eleven players on the field when, in
stoppage time, West pulled back Simon Parker who was 40 yards out but none the
less he appeared to be the last defender, although a red card would have been
out of place in a game of this nature.
