It was good to see Ashley Bayes, Steve West, Lee Matthews and Jamie Stuart back playing first team football at the Stadium although it was a shame that they were actually lining up against us this time.  As such they made up nearly half the familiar faces to the Urchins faithful as Garry Hill and Gary Calder's hard work during the previous week brought in more new faces for us to field a decent side.  And a brave performance it was too in a game which in the end could have gone either way.

Grays started strongly and took the lead after 11 minutes when Steve West blasted the ball into the roof of the net after we were slow to clear a ball on the 18 yard line. Slowly we began to trouble the Grays defence and on 24 minutes Ashley Bayes struggled to hold on to a low 20 yard free kick from Danny Shipp with Jean-Michel Sigere looming.  A golden chance to equalise came on 31 minutes.  Sigere was sent on a run down the right flank from a counter attack and his effort was parried by Bayes, but it only went as far as Greg Ngoyi who shot over with the whole goal to aim at.

Our equaliser did come, though, four minutes into the second half.  A long cross in from Chris Carruthers was dropped by Bayes under pressure from Ngoyi and David Hicks' shot goalwards was handled on the line by Stuart.  Stuart was sent off - the cruel cheers which normally follow the sending off of an opponent were a little louder this time - and Danny Shipp prodded the ball home after Bayes initially blocked his spot kick.  Leroy Griffiths shot over under pressure from the Hornchurch defence following a good move on 78 minutes and there were loud claims for another penalty for us 5 minutes later when Sigere went down in the area after muscling past a Grays defender on the goalline - claims which were turned down by the referee.  Ten minutes later Grays scored the winning goal and it was Vill Powell who got clear after being put through by Griffiths, shooting confidently past Baruwa from the edge of the penalty area.

In an exciting finish Jamie Southon came closest to a second equaliser when he just missed with an overhead kick but the day belonged, just, to Grays.  Nevertheless it was another great performance.
