In the end the scoreline
looked convincing, but if it wasn't for a mad five minute spell in the second
half our makeshift side could well have made the League Two team sweat a little
more.
In fact we took the lead
after only 3 minutes when a
Steve Castle free kick from close to the right touchline was allowed to travel
all the way across goal and into the far corner. Boston came at us in waves
but were constantly frustrated. Adiobun Baruwa made a great save from a
well struck Danny Thomas volley on 7 minutes and Jason Lee managed to sky the
ball over the bar a couple of minutes later after a cross from Andy Kirk.
Lee Thompson brought out another fine save from Baruwa on 15 minutes but was
much wider of the mark 10 minutes later when he spurned a great chance from the
corner of the areal. Boston's hat-trick hero from the week before was taken off
after pulling up with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Tam McManus 10
minutes before half time but they were undaunted, Baruwa saving well once more
from Thompson.
So things looked promising for us at half time with the home
crowd becoming a little restless, but it all changed very quickly. Boston
came out all guns blazing and the early goal they needed came 2 minutes in when
Lee Thompson volleyed home after
a long throw. A minute later
Tam McManus put the home side in
front, knocking in a loose ball after Simon Downer cleared off the line.
Downer was then sent off after a wild challenge on McManus and it looked as if
our world would fall apart. With the home side in front things settled a
little and we didn't look too overwhelmed being a man down. Thompson
missed a sitter from 6 yards from a great move and a Thomas cross on 65
minutes, but two minutes later it was 3-1 after a long
goal kick was headed on by Lee for McManus to run clear and slot home.
With 15 minutes left the home side relaxed a little too much and young
Terry Everett took advantage of
a bad mistake by keeper Nathan Abbey to nick the ball off him and run through to
blast into the roof of the empty net.
Boston soon restored their lead though through
David Noble who shot home from
12 yards following another strong attack and the fifth came with two minutes
left when Paul Ellender fooled
Baruwa with a back-header from 6 yards following a dangerous looking free kick
from an acute angle.
Despite the defeat, a stirling performance under the
circumstances from the team, earning an ovation from the Boston fans at the end,
and plenty of noise from our travelling support made it a great day out.
